Hostgator is one of the top 3 web hosts in world, in terms of number of domains hosted. They used to be a specialist shared host, but have entered VPS market in a big way. Hostgator offer a number of configurations, starting with a very basic Level 1 to powerful VPS at Level 9, which is comparable to mid size dedicated servers. The USP of Hostgator shared hosting is excellent customer service and fortunately the same can be said about VPS service as well.

MediaTemple
MediaTemple (MT) is one of the most popular grid hosting service providers. They were one of the first companies to offer grid hosting and today host over 200,000 websites.
With a starting price of $20 per month, MediaTemple charges way less that competitors like Rackspace Cloud(Mosso). MediaTemple offers shared hosting (Grid Service – GS) as well as virtual dedicated hosting (Dedicated Virtual – DV) starting from $50 per month.
Compared to traditional shared hosting, grid hosting has the advantage of being able to easily manage traffic spikes. Sudden increase in traffic, for example getting listed in Digg or other other social networking sites, doesn't create any problem for sites hosted with grid hosting providers.

SingleHop
Singlehop is a relatively young dedicated hosting provider, founded in 2006. In last few years, they have grown exponentially, typical of any successful start up. Today, they are a mid sized company with two data centers and over 8000 dedicated servers. Singlehop offer both dedicated servers and cloud hosting, and have a fully automated back end. Server installs, OS reloads etc are among many of the tasks that have been automated. Their automation system known as LEAP also allows the users to manage their server from mobile, iPad and more.

Established in 1997, Liquidweb is basically a managed dedicated host. Even though they offer VPS and shared hosting, they are best known for their dedicated servers. The USP of Liquidweb is their customer support, which they call “Heroic Support”. Heroic or otherwise, within their price range, there are very few hosts that give as much stress on customer support as Liquidweb.

URLJet is a host with a difference. They provide all sort of hosting services - shared hosting, VPS and dedicated servers – but their hosting platforms are optimized for forum hosting. Even the highly rated shared hosting provider Hostgator trust on thePlanet for their servers. They claim to manage over 48,500 servers, including that of corporate clients.
