One advantage of hosting with a big company is that they will own a top notch data center and will have network provided by major carriers for redundancy. The same is true about 1and1 as well. They own their data center and machines, have been providing excellent uptime for a long time. Redundant network allow them to update or troubleshoot routers etc, without affecting the traffic to the servers. Connectivity is provided by companies like Level3, Global Crossing, and Cogent.
1and1 have data centers in US(Lenexa, KS) and Europe, where they have presence in UK and Germany.
1and1 VPS Server

1and1 doesn't offer managed services for VPS or dedicated servers. That means, users are expected to take care of their server and will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining the software and services running on it. This would mean that the cost would be much lesser than managed servers and web masters with some technical skills will have no problem with it.
However for web masters with no technical skills, 1and1 wouldn't be the ideal choice. They may want to look into reasonably priced managed services like Liquidweb, ServInt etc.

1and 1 offer support tickets, toll free lines etc. just like most big hosts. Their call center is outsourced but the server administrators are based in US. Overall, their support get mixed reviews.
While they are professionals, most users feel the lack of a personal touch. There has been reports of billing issues, technical issues etc. which take time to get fixed.

All 1and1 hosting products are priced competitively. Shared hosting starts below $4.00 per month and VPS starts at $29.00 per month for 256 MB assured RAM. 1And1 offers a good deal especially for the VPS. The highest configuration VPSIII at $59.00 per month is a great deal, as it comes with 1 GB assured RAM. Even the other two VPS come with sufficient amount of RAM and the prices are nearly half of what competitors like Godaddy charges.

1and1 doesn't offer any discount coupons, but they have periodic promotions running which can be found on their website.
Recommendation
While all their hosting products are cheap, VPS are especially attractive. You get a lot of RAM(which is critical) for less price, compared to similar hosts. We strongly recommend 1and1 VPS for web masters who are looking for cheap, reliable self managed servers.
